HISAR: A 57-year-old police sub-inspector was beaten to death outside his home in Haryana’s Hisar on Thursday night after he tried to stop a group of men from creating a ruckus in his neighbourhood. The victim, identified as Sub-Inspector Ramesh Kumar, was allegedly attacked with bricks and sticks by the hooligans. His nephew, Amit Kumar, was also injured while trying to intervene.
Police have arrested five suspects in connection with the murder.
Ramesh Kumar, who was posted at the office of the ADGP, Hisar Range, lived with his family in the city. Around 11 pm, a group of men gathered outside his house, drinking and shouting abuses. When Kumar stepped out and asked them to leave, they dispersed — only to return about 20 minutes later with reinforcements.
This time, the group allegedly assaulted Kumar, hitting him with bricks and construction debris. When Amit tried to rescue his uncle, the attackers turned on him as well. Hearing their cries, neighbours rushed out, prompting the assailants to flee, leaving behind a car and two motorcycles.
Both victims were taken to Hisar General Hospital, where doctors declared Ramesh Kumar dead on arrival. Amit remains under treatment.
Senior police officers, including ADGP K.K. Rao and SP Shashank Kumar Sawan, visited the spot soon after the incident. SP Sawan said preliminary investigation indicates that the officer died of a head injury.
The five arrested men were identified as Mahendra alias Gabbar (54), his son Subhash alias Sahil (20), Narendra (28), Praveen alias Lalla (33), and Jatin (33). Police said the accused tried to flee but were caught after a chase. Narendra and Subhash suffered leg fractures, while Mahendra sustained a hand injury.
According to investigators, the accused and the victim’s family are distantly related and live in the same locality. Police are searching for at least five more suspects involved in the attack.
A case has been registered against 10 named individuals and several unidentified men for murder and related offences based on Amit Kumar’s complaint.
SI Ramesh Kumar is survived by his wife, two daughters, and a son.
