DURGAPUR: The survivor of the Durgapur gang rape case on Friday identified five of the six accused during a Test Identification (TI) parade held at the Durgapur Correctional Home, in the presence of a magistrate. The sixth accused, a 23-year-old college student who is known to the survivor, was not included in the lineup.
The survivor, accompanied by her mother and lawyer, arrived at the prison around 12:15 pm and left shortly after 1:20 pm. During the identification process, she was alone with magistrate Sarkar, as per procedure.
Her lawyer, Partha Ghosh, said the investigation was “progressing well” and the identification process had gone “as per protocol.” He added, “The TI parade is a crucial step in the probe, and we are satisfied with the outcome. We are also monitoring the investigation closely and will act if any lapses are found.”
Key Accused Identified
Among those identified were Nasiruddin Sk alias Samrat (23), Apu Bauri (21), and Firdaus Sk (23) — all of whom, according to police, participated directly in the gang rape. “One of them raped her, while the two others were present and assisted. Under provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), this makes all three guilty of gang rape,” said an investigating officer.
The other two accused, Sk Riyazuddin (31) and Sk Safiq (25), allegedly arrived at the scene later, extorted the survivor, and snatched her phone. Police said both have confessed to their crimes before a magistrate.
Survivor’s Account
According to the survivor’s statement, on the night of October 10, her college friend Wasef Ali (23) took her out of campus on the pretext of getting food. He then allegedly took her to a deserted area and molested her. Soon after, the three main accused appeared at the spot, and Ali fled the scene as she was gang-raped and robbed.
Ali later claimed in court that he and the survivor were in a relationship and that she had gone with him voluntarily. However, police maintain that evidence supports the survivor’s version of events.
Officials said the TI parade marks a significant development in the investigation, paving the way for further legal proceedings against the accused.
