MOHALI: A Turkish woman was killed after an allegedly speeding Audi car struck her while she was crossing the road on Zirakpur’s busy VIP Road late Monday night. The driver fled the scene after the accident, and police are examining CCTV footage to identify the vehicle and trace the accused.

The victim, identified as Mawluda, died on the spot after being hit by the high-speed car near a private hospital around midnight.

According to police and eyewitnesses, Mawluda was walking with her friend Abhishek, also known as Abhi, after visiting a patient at the hospital when the black Audi allegedly rammed into them while they were crossing the road.

The impact was severe, with Mawluda reportedly thrown 12 to 14 feet into the air before landing on the other side of the road. She sustained critical injuries and died due to excessive bleeding.

Abhishek told police that Mawluda had accompanied him to the hospital to check on his pregnant wife. As they stepped onto the main road outside the hospital, the speeding car struck them. Abhishek suffered minor injuries.

Bystanders alerted the police control room immediately after the incident. However, locals alleged that police reached the scene nearly an hour after the alert.

Police have shifted the body to the civil hospital mortuary. Investigating officer ASI Raj Kumar said Mawluda’s sister is travelling from Turkey to India, and the postmortem will be conducted after her arrival. Authorities are analysing CCTV footage from nearby cameras to identify the vehicle and arrest the driver.
