MADRID: Spain on Sunday strongly condemned the attempted assassination of Colombian opposition senator and presidential hopeful Miguel Uribe, declaring that “violence has no place in our societies.” In an official statement, Spain’s foreign ministry expressed solidarity with the Colombian people and extended wishes for Uribe’s swift recovery. “Spain conveys its best wishes for a speedy recovery to the victim and all its solidarity to his family and friends, as well as to the Colombian people,” the statement read. Uribe, a right-wing senator and prominent candidate in Colombia’s upcoming presidential election, was shot while addressing supporters in Bogotá. He sustained two gunshot wounds to the head and one to the knee. A security guard at the scene apprehended the suspected shooter, who is reportedly a 15-year-old minor. Uribe was airlifted to a hospital in critical condition and underwent emergency surgery at Santa Fe Clinic in the capital.
