Roorkee: An assistant professor deployed as an external examiner for physics practicals at KLDAV PG College in Roorkee has been arrested for allegedly molesting 12 undergraduate students during their viva examination. The accused, Abdul Aleem Ansari, 44, is a faculty member at Government Degree College Chudiyala near Roorkee.
Ansari was taken into custody on Thursday and presented before a local court on Friday. The court released him on personal bonds, in accordance with Supreme Court guidelines concerning offences carrying imprisonment of less than seven years. He has been booked under Section 75(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) for sexual harassment, which carries a maximum sentence of three years.
According to police, Ansari, a resident of Doiwala in Dehradun, conducted the viva voce exam behind closed doors. Multiple students alleged that he touched them inappropriately—placing his hands on their backs, cheeks, and chest—and attempted to grope them.
Initially reluctant to speak out, the students began sharing their experiences with one another and soon realized that at least 12 of them had faced similar misconduct. One of the victims reported that Ansari not only touched her inappropriately but also wrote his phone number on her hand, asking her to call him later that night.
Following protests by the students, the college administration filed a complaint at Gangnahar police station. “We took the accused into custody from the college premises on Thursday,” said SHO RK Saklani.
In response to the incident, KLDAV PG College has cancelled all practical examinations conducted by Ansari. Fresh exam dates will be announced soon, according to Principal Prof MP Singh, who assured that a fair and safe environment will be maintained for all students.
