JAMMU: The Crime Branch of Jammu & Kashmir Police has arrested Sher Singh, a native of Hisar, Haryana, in connection with the alleged murder of a Mumbai woman in August, sources said on Friday. While officials confirmed the arrest, they declined to share further details, stating that more information would be made public in the coming days.

The incident took place on August 21, when an unidentified gunman opened fire inside a physiotherapy centre in Jammu’s Sainik Colony. The shooting left three women injured: Mehjabeen Akil Sheikh and her sister Fatima, both from Malad (West), Mumbai, and Jaspreet Kaur from Ludhiana. They were initially admitted to JK Medicity Hospital by two men who falsely claimed the women had been injured in a road accident.

Jaspreet later went missing from the hospital, while Mehjabeen and Fatima were shifted to a private medical college and subsequently to the Government Medical College in Jammu. Mehjabeen succumbed to her injuries on August 29. A medical examination revealed that the injuries were caused by gunshots, prompting police to register a murder case.

In response, the Crime Branch headquarters formed a six-member Special Investigation Team (SIT) on September 19 to probe the case. Following her recovery, Fatima was detained for questioning regarding the shooting at the physiotherapy centre, which has reportedly been under scrutiny for suspicious activities.

Three police personnel, including the Station House Officer (SHO) of the area, were suspended for allegedly ignoring or covering up these activities. The SIT is now investigating both the circumstances surrounding the murder and the potential involvement of the suspended officers in initially misrepresenting the shooting as an accident.
