KARACHI: Pakistan’s Independence Day celebrations in Karachi turned deadly after “reckless” aerial firing left three people dead — including an eight-year-old girl and a senior citizen — and more than 60 injured, officials said.

The girl was struck by a stray bullet in Azizabad, while a man identified as Stephen was killed in Korangi, Geo News reported. Rescue teams said dozens of others were hurt in similar incidents across the city during late-night celebrations.

Karachi has seen a surge in firearm-related casualties this year. In January alone, at least 42 people, including five women, were killed and 233 injured in shooting incidents, according to ARY News. Causes ranged from personal disputes and robbery resistance to stray bullets from celebratory firing.
