Dental Clinic Linked to Eight Patient Deaths Sealed in Tiruppattur

TIRUPPATTUR: Authorities in Tiruppattur district on Tuesday sealed a dental clinic operated by a dentist held responsible for the deaths of eight patients following treatment at his facility in 2023.
The clinic, originally named V D S Clinic and run by dentist Arivazhagan, came under scrutiny after eight patients died over a six-month period. Investigations by the Tamil Nadu Directorate of Public Health and Christian Medical College (CMC), Vellore, revealed gross medical negligence, including the reuse of single-use equipment and unsterile dental practices, which led to infections and ultimately the deaths.
Despite the findings, Arivazhagan reportedly continued operating under a new name, ‘Arivu Hospital’, attempting to conceal the clinic’s past. Following a tip-off, a team led by joint director of health, Dr. V. Gnanameenakshi, conducted a raid on the facility.
Officials issued a notice to Arivazhagan, demanding a written explanation within three days. However, with his response deemed unsatisfactory, the hospital was sealed on Tuesday.
“We inspected the clinic following the deaths of eight patients. The dentist's explanation did not justify the continued operation of the facility. As a result, we have sealed the premises and reported the matter to the Dental Council, recommending further action,” Dr. Gnanameenakshi told reporters.
