KHARTOUM: More than 1,000 people have been killed after a massive landslide buried an entire village in Sudan’s war-torn Darfur region, a rebel group said late Monday. Only one survivor has been found.
The Sudan Liberation Movement/Army reported that the disaster struck Tarasin village in the Marra mountains on Sunday. “Initial information indicates the death of all village residents, estimated at more than one thousand individuals, with only one survivor,” the group said in a statement.
Darfur’s governor Minni Minnawi, who is aligned with the army, called it a “humanitarian tragedy that goes beyond the borders of the region.” He urged international aid groups to intervene urgently: “The tragedy is greater than what our people can bear alone.”
The disaster comes as Sudan remains locked in a brutal civil war between the army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF), a conflict that has killed tens of thousands and displaced millions since April 2023. The Marra mountains—long a rebel stronghold—are largely inaccessible to humanitarian organisations due to the ongoing fighting, raising fears that relief and recovery efforts will be severely hampered.
