NEW DELHI: After a month-long rise, the latest wave of Covid-19 in India is showing signs of easing. Active cases have dropped from over 7,000 on June 11 to 4,425, with just one death reported in the past 24 hours, according to government data.

Doctors say the current trend suggests that Covid-19 has become endemic, posing little threat to the general population. “The virus is no longer serious for most people. That’s why many don’t even bother testing when they have symptoms,” said a senior physician.

The majority of infections now cause mild fever, cough, or cold, with recovery in 2–3 days at home. Medical attention is typically only advised for those with underlying health conditions such as cancer, kidney issues, or heart disease.

“We aren’t recommending Covid testing for everyone with flu-like symptoms,” said Dr. Rommel Tickoo, director of internal medicine at Max Hospital, Saket. “However, anxiety over rising cases has led some to test themselves, and a few turned out positive. Treatment remains focused on rest and symptomatic relief.”

He also advised self-isolation in case of Covid-like symptoms, to prevent further spread, even if the illness is mild.

Dr. Arjun Khanna, head of pulmonology at Amrita Hospital, Faridabad, pointed out a notable shift: “Covid now looks very similar to other viral respiratory infections,” making it harder to distinguish clinically.

With the virus evolving and immunity levels higher across the population, doctors emphasize rest over testing, unless symptoms worsen or the patient is at high risk.
