COPENHAGEN: Denmark’s main international airport was forced to close on Monday evening after unidentified drones were spotted flying in its airspace, disrupting operations and diverting several flights.

Airport spokeswoman Lise Agerley Kurstein said airspace around Copenhagen Airport had been shut since 8:30 pm (1830 GMT) following reports of “two to three unidentified drones.” As a result, around 15 flights were diverted to alternative airports.

Copenhagen police confirmed multiple sightings. “Three or four big drones have been observed flying back and forth,” duty officer Anette Ostenfeldt told AFP, noting that police teams were on site investigating.

Ostenfeldt said it remained unclear whether the drones were civilian or military but stressed they were “bigger than what you as a private individual can buy.”

Airport authorities said no aircraft could take off or land until the airspace was declared safe. “We currently have no timeline for reopening,” Kurstein added.
