CLAIRTON, Pennsylvania: An explosion at US Steel’s Clairton Coke Works plant near Pittsburgh on Monday left one person dead, dozens injured, and several trapped under rubble, officials said. Emergency crews are working to free those still caught in the debris.

Allegheny County’s Emergency Services reported a fire at the facility around 10:51 a.m., with five people taken to hospital. The scene remains active, and authorities have urged residents nearby to follow safety instructions.

The Clairton plant, the largest coking operation in North America, has faced safety and environmental controversies in the past, including a February blast caused by a battery malfunction and multiple lawsuits over air pollution.

Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro said state police and emergency management are assisting local responders and urged prayers for the Clairton community.
