AMRITSAR: In the wake of India's diplomatic reaction to Tuesday’s Pahalgam attack, tensions flared along the international border in Punjab’s Ferozepur on Thursday after a BSF constable was detained by Pakistan Rangers. The trooper reportedly crossed into Pakistani territory by about five paces while monitoring local farmers near the zero-line.

The constable, identified as PK Sahu from the BSF’s 182nd Battalion, hails from Hooghly in West Bengal. He was in uniform and armed with his service rifle at the time of the incident.

Following confirmation of Sahu’s detention, a BSF delegation arrived at the Jalloke border outpost and held a flag meeting with Pakistan Rangers. "BSF remains in communication with the Rangers to ensure the constable’s safe return," a source said, adding that a request has been made for a follow-up flag meeting at Hussainiwala on Friday, but a response is still awaited.

According to officials, Sahu had recently been posted to the Ferozepur sector and may not have been fully acquainted with the area's strict border protocols. He is believed to have crossed the line unintentionally while moving towards a tree for shade to better observe local farmers, who are allowed to work their fields near the border under BSF supervision. During the sowing season, the BSF also deploys “Kisan Guards” to ensure security in the area.
