NEW DELHI: The "Apna Ghar" resting facilities for truck drivers along national highways, which offer well-equipped amenities for just Rs 112 for an eight-hour stay, are seeing a significant increase in demand. Data reveals that bookings by drivers have surged more than five times from the April-May period to June.
In April and May, there were 3,348 bookings—averaging 55 per day—while in June, the number jumped to 16,559 bookings, or 552 per day. With the expansion of these facilities, the government expects bookings to rise even further. The initiative was introduced to provide truck drivers with a safe and affordable place to rest, addressing the challenges they face when forced to sleep in their trucks or at roadside eateries due to the lack of proper accommodations along highways.
Officials report that over 65,000 drivers have downloaded the Apna Ghar mobile app and registered on it. To encourage more drivers to use the service, a new promotional scheme was launched in June 2025, offering free dormitory stays at Apna Ghar facilities, provided drivers purchase at least 50 liters of high-speed diesel from the site. The scheme will run for three months.
As of June, 368 Apna Ghar facilities have been established by oil marketing companies (OMCs), including four on the under-construction Delhi-Mumbai Expressway. Once completed, the expressway will have 30 such facilities in total.
Petroleum and Natural Gas Minister Hardeep Singh Puri shared on X (formerly Twitter), "Most accidents on highways are caused by drivers not resting enough or getting proper sleep. Air-conditioned Apna Ghars on highways have emerged as a major solution. These facilities provide food, cooking spaces, hot and cold water, bathrooms, parking, and beds, all designed to ensure drivers can rest safely."
Drivers can book the facilities via the mobile app or directly at the resting sites. Additionally, the government plans to create trucker-friendly amenities at 1,000 large-format fuel stations on national highways by March 2027. These non-fuel services will include dormitories (with 10-30 beds), eateries, self-cooking areas, toilets, dedicated bathing spaces, drinking water, and secure parking.
