RAIPUR: Six people, including two women, lost their lives in separate lightning strikes in Chhattisgarh’s Gariyaband and Raigarh districts on Wednesday as sudden thunderstorms swept the region.
In Raigarh, four people were killed—two young men tending cattle and two others returning from fields—when lightning struck, also killing three goats. In Gariyaband, two women were fatally struck during evening storms.
The latest incidents add to a string of lightning-related deaths across the state. Just last week in Surajpur, a youth was killed and six others injured when lightning struck a group of villagers.
According to the NCRB’s Accidental Deaths and Suicides in India 2023 report, lightning claimed 180 lives in Chhattisgarh last year, underscoring the state’s high vulnerability to such extreme weather events.
